What Makes a Good Small Business Website? The 2026 Checklist
Not all websites are created equal. A website that looks great but loads slowly, can’t be found on Google, and has no clear calls to action is costing you money — not making it. Here’s the checklist we use at Oop Design to ensure every website we build is actually doing its job.
Design and User Experience
- Professional, uncluttered design that reflects your brand
- Mobile-responsive — looks and works correctly on all screen sizes
- Easy navigation — visitors find what they need in 2 clicks or fewer
- Consistent fonts, colours, and imagery throughout
- No broken links or missing images
- Clear logo and branding visible in the header
Speed and Technical Performance
- Loads in under 3 seconds on mobile (test at pagespeed.web.dev)
- Images compressed and served in WebP format
- Hosted on quality Australian hosting
- SSL certificate installed (https:// not http://)
- Caching enabled
- No unnecessary plugins slowing the site down
SEO Foundations
- One unique H1 tag per page containing the primary keyword
- Unique title tag for every page (under 60 characters)
- Unique meta description for every page (under 160 characters)
- Clean URL structure (e.g. /web-design-sunshine-coast/ not /?p=123)
- Google Search Console verified and sitemap submitted
- Google Analytics 4 installed and tracking correctly
- Google Business Profile linked to the website
- Alt text on all images
Content and Conversion
- Clear value proposition on the homepage — what you do and who you help
- Prominent phone number (clickable on mobile) in the header
- Call to action on every page — “Get a Quote”, “Book Now”, “Call Us”
- Service pages with detailed, unique content for each service
- About page with real team photos and business story
- Testimonials or Google reviews displayed prominently
- Contact page with form, phone, email, address, and map
- FAQ section addressing common customer questions
Trust and Credibility
- Real photos of your team, premises, and work (not stock images)
- Google review rating displayed on homepage
- Case studies or before/after project examples
- Logos of brands you’ve worked with or certifications held
- Privacy policy and terms and conditions pages
- ABN visible in footer
Security and Maintenance
- WordPress core, themes, and plugins updated regularly
- Security plugin installed (Wordfence or similar)
- Regular offsite backups
- Spam protection on contact forms
- Login protected with strong passwords and two-factor authentication
How Does Your Website Score?
If you’re ticking fewer than half of these boxes, your website is likely underperforming. Most issues are fixable without a full rebuild — often a combination of speed optimisation, SEO setup, and content improvements is enough to make a significant difference.
